Female alchemists work in the bottom corners of the page, linking the operations of the heavens with the actions inside laboratory vessels. Perhaps the celestial scene is framed with women wielding laboratory apparatus to associate the author's work with that of the legendary female alchemist of antiquity, Mary the Jew.
