Darra Goldstein, editor of The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets, discusses her new book with Marcia Reed, chief curator at the Getty Research Institute. More than just a compendium of pastries, candies, ices, preserves, and confections, this reference work reveals how the human proclivity for sweets has brought richness to language, art, and, of course, gastronomy.

A professor of Russian at Williams College, Goldstein is the founding editor of Gastronomica: The Journal of Food and Culture, named the 2012 Publication of the Year by the James Beard Foundation.

This lecture complements the exhibition The Edible Monument: The Art of Food for Festivals, on view at the Getty Research Institute from October 13, 2015, to March 13, 2016.
