About

Goal

The Research Into Practice Initiative organizes workshops, colloquia, and other training to help conservation practitioners apply research advances made by Getty and its partners to practical problems. The initiative links research to application, promotes collaboration among scientists and conservators, and helps identify areas for further research and field testing.

Training activities to date have focused on acrylic painted surfaces, porous building materials, Asian lacquer, and plastics.

Outcomes

  • Four publications, three conference papers, various teaching resources, and a bibliography incorporated within AATA Online
  • Colloquium and workshop series on new cleaning products and systems for acrylic painted surfaces based on Getty's collaborative scientific testing
  • Workshop series on analytical and sampling procedures for lacquers
  • Training for field-based conservation professionals on use of poultice treatments to remove salts from porous building materials
  • Workshop series and open source workbook on the fundamentals of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and data interpretation
