About

Goal

This initiative helps visitors connect to artwork on a deeper level by providing safe, accessible spaces for reflection, meaning-making, and sharing, and allowing for an open, curious, and profound engagement with works of art. We are currently working with three audience areas: adults, teens, and colleagues within the field. Besides developing mindfulness-based programs that can be used within our galleries, we aim to foster a network of partners in order to analyze and improve the young field of mindfulness at museums.

Outcomes

  • Art Impact is a multi-visit museum education program for youth from underserved communities utilizing mindfulness-based approaches to explore works of art in the Getty’s galleries.
  • Mindful Moments in the Museum are sessions for the general public led by Getty staff that guide viewers in ways to experience artworks on a deeper, more meditative level.
  • The Mindfulness in the Museum Convening, taking place at the Getty Center on August 23, 2022 brings together educators who have a mindfulness practice or a curiosity about mindfulness-based approaches to share and learn from one another.
