About

Goal

This project expanded the research potential of the German art trade between 1900 and 1945 by using the Getty Provenance Index® (GPI) to provide access to newly digitized auction sales catalogs related to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This endeavor was significant not only for art historical studies but also for interdisciplinary investigations of the cultural policies and political objectives of the Nazi Party.

Partners

This project was done in partnership between the Getty Research Institute, the Kunstbibliothek—Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg, and the Forschungsstelle "Entartete Kunst" at the Universität Hamburg. The first phase of the project was supported jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft as well as by a grant from the VolkswagenStiftung.
