About
Goal
Conservation of this earthwork is particularly challenging given Spiral Jetty's unpredictable environment—the 1,500-foot work extends into the Great Salt Lake and is subject to the lake's fluctuating water levels, erosion, and sand and silt deposits.
At the request of the Dia Art Foundation, which acquired the work from the artist's estate in 1999, the Conservation Institute aimed to develop a simple, consistent, and cost-effective means of documenting the work for possible conservation.
