About

Goal

The Bulla Regia Model Conservation Project builds on the Getty's training of mosaic technicians in Tunisia, aiming to demonstrate best practices in the conservation of in situ mosaics, and through sharing of outcomes, improve the state of conservation of archeological mosaics throughout the region.

At Bulla Regia, trained technicians carry out mosaic conservation work, demonstrating the impact of Getty-supported training and illustrating a sustainable approach to conservation practice through reliance on local resources and materials.

Outcomes

  • A conservation and maintenance plan for the more than four hundred excavated in situ mosaics at Bulla Regia, providing both a long-term program for future Institut National du Patrimoine interventions and a planning model for other sites with mosaics both in Tunisia and throughout the MOSAIKON region
  • A topographic survey of the Bulla Regia archaeological site, a metric survey of buildings with mosaics, and the creation of a GIS database for use as a site management tool
  • Conservation interventions on mosaics and wall plasters and maintenance of wall remains throughout the Maison de la Chasse, one of the site's major Roman- period houses. In addition to the reburial of selected mosaics, access barriers and walkways were designed to prevent visitors from walking directly on the mosaics as an example of presentation of a building. In another house not to be presented to visitors, the mosaics were stabilized and then reburied as a model to be carried out elsewhere at the site.
  • An open access summary report of the model field project, available in English and French editions, presenting the conservation methodology and the project's planning and implementation components.
