To be a knight was to be “ready to follow your lord into battle at any point,” says Getty manuscripts curator Larisa Grollemond.

Knights were expected to be honorable, care for the downtrodden, and follow a pious Christian faith. All of this created a complex ideal for the medieval man and extended beyond combat to how they were supposed to conduct themselves at home and in public.

But what was it like to actually ride a horse, clad in heavy armor, holding a lance? Larissa and Jessie find out in this episode of Becoming Artsy.
