Jenn Stringer, the associate vice chancellor for IT and chief information officer for the University of California, Berkeley, will be the next vice president and chief digital officer for the J. Paul Getty Trust, Getty CEO Katherine Fleming announced.

Stringer has led computer, technology and learning services in libraries and universities for over 35 years, including a decade in IT leadership roles at UC Berkeley, where she is currently responsible for the strategic oversight of campus-wide information technology.

At Getty, Stringer will oversee the organization’s IT team and Trust-wide strategic digital initiatives, including systems that support expansive digital art and photography collections, cultural heritage data management, and the archives of the Getty Library, the world’s largest dedicated to the visual arts and architecture. She will assume her post July 1.

“Jenn brings extensive IT leadership in both library and academic settings, and she shares our vision to further expand Getty’s global reach by enhancing our digital resources,” Fleming said. “Jenn believes strongly that technology can be harnessed to improve our world. We look forward to her contributions in support of Getty’s important work in the areas of cultural philanthropy, conservation, research, and exhibitions. I am thrilled that she’s agreed to join us.”

Before becoming UC Berkeley’s CIO in 2020, Stringer served as the campus’ deputy chief information officer and assistant vice chancellor for IT. She also served as the chief academic technology officer where she was responsible for bringing together educational technology, research IT, digital learning services, and the Center for Teaching and Learning to serve faculty and support student success.

Stringer was previously the director for academic technology services at New York University and director of educational technology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Stringer graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with honors in History and completed her Masters in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University. Stringer is a Frye Leadership Institute Fellow and is a past member of the EDUCAUSE Institute of Management Faculty. She currently represents EDUCAUSE on the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Steering Committee, and is a former Viewpoints Editor for Educause Review.

The move to Getty will be a homecoming for Stringer, who grew up in South Central Los Angeles.

“I am so excited to return to LA and join the Getty Digital team. They are a group of talented professionals who share my passion about the importance of making information accessible for public good,” Stringer said. “My career has focused on using technology to enable the education and research of institutions. Getty’s mission of sharing its cultural knowledge, broadly and freely, is perfectly aligned with my values.”
