President of Pomona College G. Gabrielle Starr and Clearlake Capital managing partner and co-founder José E. Feliciano have joined the J. Paul Getty Board of Trustees, Getty announced today.

G. Gabrielle Starr

Starr took office as the 10th president of Pomona College in 2017 with a track record of promoting greater access to higher education. Today she is working to strengthen the student pipeline from community colleges to four-year private institutions, and to ensure students from the full range of family incomes enroll in college and thrive.

Starr served on Governor Gavin Newsom’s California Higher Education Recovery with Equity Taskforce, charged with envisioning a new approach for post-secondary education preparation and workforce readiness as the state recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today she serves on the executive committee of the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU), and on the boards of Cedars-Sinai and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2020.

Starr’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post and The Financial Times, among other publications. She is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and author of three books, with her latest, Just in Time: Temporality, Aesthetic Experience, and Cognitive Neuroscience, published by MIT Press in June 2023. She offers a compelling case for reaching across academic disciplines to spark intellectual discovery, having started her academic career as a scholar of English literature and, over time, extending her work into neuroscience and the arts.

“I am looking forward to joining Getty’s Board of Trustees just as the institution is launching its ambitious and transformative PST ART: Art & Science Collide initiative,” says Starr. “The exploration of art and science in dialogue is one that is ripe for discovery, mutual enrichment, and important collaboration. Beyond PST ART, I have deep respect for Getty’s efforts globally, and am honored to be a part of advancing its work in this role.”

Starr grew up in Tallahassee, Florida, and attended Emory University as an undergraduate at the age of 15. At Emory, she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in women’s studies before going on to Harvard University to earn her doctorate in English and American literature, and ultimately pursuing training in cognitive neuroscience at Caltech and NYU with the support of the Mellon Foundation.

José E. Feliciano

José E. Feliciano co-founded private investment firm Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. in 2006. In addition to his investing responsibilities, he is responsible for the day-to-day management of the firm. Clearlake has over $75 billion of assets under management.

Prior to co-founding Clearlake, Feliciano was a partner and member of the investment committee at Tennenbaum Capital Partners, a senior executive at govWorks, Inc., and started his career in investment banking at Goldman, Sachs & Co.

In 2014, Feliciano co-founded the Kwanza Jones & José E. Feliciano Initiative, a philanthropic grantmaking and impact investment organization and later founded the Clearlake Impact Initiative, a philanthropic grantmaking and impact investment foundation supporting education, health and wellness, equal opportunity, and beneficial social change. He serves on the board of directors of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the Robert Toigo Foundation. He is also a trustee of Stanford University and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino.

“For over 20 years, I have admired from afar the role of Getty as an iconic arts institution providing leadership and support to communities and other organizations across the world,” said Feliciano. “As such, I am greatly honored and pleased to join the Getty Board of Trustees. I am deeply interested in the universal values expressed through the arts and its unique role in storytelling and as a tool to celebrate, and learn from, our cultural heritage. I am looking forward to helping Getty expand its continuing impact by leveraging the institution’s many strengths in areas such as arts conservation, education, research, and technology.”

Feliciano grew up in Puerto Rico and later graduated with High Honors from Princeton University, where he received a B.S. in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. He received his M.B.A. from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.
