This area of project research is in the early stages. In studies of the furniture collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the test procedure worked very well in detecting the anticipated range of materials in European lacquer formulations based on the literature review of recipes. For example, various natural resins were often found mixed together with drying oils, and shellac was also a common component. In the research plan, focus on European lacquers will begin in earnest after the data from the Asian lacquers have been fully processed.
