Ara pacis (altar (religious fixture); unknown ancient Roman, created under Emperor Augustus; consecrated 13 BCE, dedicated ...; Ara Pacis Museum (Rome, Roma province, Lazio, Italy))
Note: Horseshoe-shaped altar surrounded by a nearly square enclosing wall. Monumental Altar of Peace was constructed in the Campus Martius to celebrate the victories of Augustus in Spain and Gaul. It fell into ruins over the ages, and was reconstructed on a nearby site in 1938 from fragments. The altar was originally erected at the east edge of the Campus Martius, between the obelisk of Augustus, which served as a needle for his gigantic sundial, and the Via Flaminia, parallel with both and related to the lines of the equinox and the winter solstice. The altar unconventionally had two entrances, at the east and at the west; the measurements were determined by the equinoctial line running through them. In this way the altar was directly connected with the dates of the conception and birth of Augustus (in September, when the shadow of the obelisk lined up with the center of the Ara Pacis), just as the Mausoleum of Augustus was also integrated into the sundial system.
