Illustrated Vita Christi, with Devotional Supplements (illuminated manuscripts; Unknown English (English Illuminator); image 12th century; text 15th ...; China (Asia, World, Top of the TGN hierarchy); 2008.3; Ms. 101)
Note: 51 full-page miniatures from the 12th century and 57 full-page miniatures from the 15th century. The 51 miniatures of the Vita Christi constitute one of the most elaborate narrative Christ cycles from the period. The original manuscript may have served as a devotional picture book (with no text) or perhaps as a pictorial preface to a psalter (a manuscript containing the book of Psalms and other devotional material). A second cycle of 57 images was added in the 1400s and integrated, along with prayers, into the earlier cycle. The transformed book (formerly restricted to the story of Christ's life) spans the biblical history of the world from the fall of the rebel angels to the Apocalypse.
