San Francesco (church (building); unknown Italian architects; commissioned by the Franciscan o...; consecrated in 1266 by Pope Cl...)
Note: Roman Catholic church under administration of the Diocese of Orvieto-Todi. A Franciscan hermitage was established near Orvieto in the early 13th century; the present church was begun in 1234, consecrated as SS Francesco e Ambrogio, honoring Francis of Assisi and Ambrose of Massa who had died in 1240. It was enlarged in 1264; then consecrated as San Francesco by Pope Clement IV. Was the largest church in Orvieto prior to the completion of the Orvieto cathedral 1290. The original building had a typical Franciscan hall-church plan. The interior was rebuilt ultimately in Baroque style 1768-1773, after an earlier renovation in the 16th century; additions included colonnades, altars along the lateral walls, side chapels, and a dome over the transept. The original facade has been heavily restored and the medieval rose window removed; the original sculpted marble portal survives, made of pink stone from Mt. Subasio of Assisi. The church is noted for the solemn funeral of Henri of Almain held here in 1273; he was an English knight assassinated in Viterbo. The funeral was attended by Pope Gregory X, King Edward I of England, and his wife Eleanor of Castile who were on a return journey from the Holy Land.
