Stained–Glass Window (stained glass (visual works); Frank Lloyd Wright (American, 1867-1959); 1912; Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City, New York state, U...; 67.231.1)
Note: Designed for the playhouse addition to the Avery Coonley estate, which had a clerestory containing more than thirty windows, each one slightly different. Whereas the design of most of Wright's early ornament was derived from natural forms, the Coonley windows are purely geometric, recalling the abstract compositions of contemporary European painters. The use of primary instead of earth tones was also unusual for Wright at that time. The so-called playhouse was actually a kindergarten run by Mrs. Coonley, and Wright undoubtedly had children in mind when he chose to use these festive shapes and colors.
