Queen of the Night (drawing (visual work); Moritz von Schwind (Austrian, 1804 - 1871) (Austrian Artist)...; about 1864 - 1867; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 2009.55)
Note: The drawing shows the Queen of the Night from Mozart's The Magic Flute. The conception is magisterial, as she steps down from her cloud throne, surrounded by a full moon resembling an aureole. With outstretched arms, she sings the renowned aria of the first act "O zitt're nicht, mein lieber Sohn!" Her commanding presence is enhanced by the drapery that flutters outward under her outstretched arms.
