View of Amalfi (drawing (visual work); Carl Wagner (German, 1796 - 1867) (German Artist); 1823; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.76)
Note: The drawing represents a detailed view Amalfi-as seen from the north-the famous coastal town southeast of Naples. Having left Germany in August 1822, Wagner arrived in Rome in October that year, but he did not reach the Naples area until early May 1823. Given that the artist was back in Rome on the 28th of September and that the drawing dates from the 17th of July, Wagner must have executed this sheet as he was heading back to the Eternal City. Minute and precise, his pen technique vividly renders the layered structure of the city's lay-out as well as the picturesque character of its rocky surroundings. While the exact purpose of the drawing is not known, it was likely drawn as an autonomous study with the idea that it might serve later as the basis for a painting.Carl Wagner was born the son of the poet and novelist Ernst Johann Wagner (1769-1812). Carl studied at the Dresden academy from 1817 to 1820; there he was acquainted with tenors of the German Romantic movement-notably Ludwig Richter, Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus and Ernst Ferdinand Oehme. Wagner went to Italy from 1822 to 1825. In Rome he visited Johann Christian Reinhart, whose work he admired very much. After his return to Germany, Wagner became court artist and head of the collections of the dukes of Sachsen-Meiningen, in the southern part of Thuringia-a region which he depicted on many occasions.
