The Visitation (drawing (visual work); Theodor Rehbenitz (German painter and draftsman, 1791-1861) ...; 1820; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 2009.70)
Note: The drawing is a wondrously finished and extensively inscribed modello for Rehbenitz's oil painting of The Visitation (Lübeck, Museum Behnhaus) that he executed in 1825 while living in Perugia. As indicated in his inscription, he made the modello in Rome in 1820. The proposed drawing is closely related to a less worked up cartoon for the painting also in the Lübeck museum, where most of the contents of Rehbenitz's studio are now housed. Another of his religious paintings in Lübeck, The Temptation of Christ, has an elaborate gold frame inscribed at the bottom with the appropriate Bible verse. The painting related to the proposed modello lacks such a frame, but the modello itself, with its elaborate, inscribed frame, indicates that he had intended to so frame the related painting. There are many changes among the painting, the proposed modello and the cartoon. Basically, all of these show the pregnant Mary meeting Elizabeth under a portico. Joseph waits outside at left, while at right, Zachariah pours over books in his study. The silvery tonality and incredible degree of detail in the pencil work encountered in the proposed modello can only call to mind the famed Meisterstiche (Master Prints) of Albrecht Dürer, especially St. Jerome in His Study. In comparing the proposed drawing with Dürer's famed print, one sees parallels in the upward view into the architecture, the amazing description of interior and exterior light, the theme of the scholar in contemplation, and the wonderfully textural and detailed depiction of natural elements. To the Nazarenes (the group of German artists living in Rome in the early 19th century who were devoted to reviving the "pure" Renaissance art of Raphael and Dürer), Dürer was their overarching ideal, combining unparalleled artistic mastery, the highest standards of workmanship, and profound piety in his life and art. This modello by Rehbenitz embodies the Nazarene worship of Dürer.
