Perseus and Medusa (sculpture (visual works); Ginori Porcelain Factory, after models by Giovanni Battista ...; 1750 - 1760; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 94.SE.76.2)
Note: The subject of the group derives from an episode in Ovid's Metamorphoses. The scene of Perseus and Medusa (54:773-803) refers to the moment when the hero surpises Medusa in her sleep and, avoiding her deadly gaze by looking at her reflection in his polished shield, decapitates her with his curved sword. The group is placed on a rocky platform that sits on a polychrome and parcel gilt base of elaborate scrolls, acanthus leaves, and rocaille elements. Small urns embellished with green foliate and gold decoration at each of the four corners served as candle-sockets. The base has been fired separately from the figure group.Painted in the shop of Johann Karl Wendelin Anreiter von Zirnfeld (Austrian, active 1739 - 1745)
