Visjnoe (sculpture (visual works); unknown Indian; 750/825 CE; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-RAK-1990-3; RM001.collect.2193)
Note: This smoothly polished stone figure represents the Hindu god Vishnu, one of the principal gods of the Hindu pantheon. Vishnu keeps creation in existence, he guards the equilibrium between good and evil. He acts whenever this equilibrium is threatened. The god descends to earth in the form or incarnation which is best suited to the situation. Two of his incarnations are combined in this figure, on the two sides of his head: on the left the lion, on the right the boar. This three-headed figure was especially venerated in Kashmir, in Northern India. The masterful rendering of the god's upper body with its well-defined musculature is characteristic of figures from Kashmir between 750 and 850.
