Note: War dance is a close copy of a drawing by John Alexander Gilfillan, a Wanganui farmer and artist, whom Grant may have met. Gilfillan's drawing, also titled War dance (Hocken Collections, Uare Taoka o Hakena, University of Otago), was done before mid-1847, when he moved to Australia. The drawing is unusual in showing a woman performing the haka. (Marian Minson, 2009)
