Note: The French printer and lithographer Gottfried or Godefroy Engelmann was born in Mulhouse or Mülhausen in the Alsace region. He contributed to the development of the lithographic process, submitting to the Société d'encouragement a Recueil d'essais lithographiques (ca. 1816); "Lithographié par G. Engelmann, rue cassette no. 18 à Paris"--in lower margin; Title from: Recueil d'essais lithographiques; The French draftsman Antoine-Laurent Castellan made drawings while traveling in France, Spain, Italy and Turkey. He recorded landscapes and sites that he would subsequently incorporate in idealized representations; The crayon-manner lithograph, which was originally issued in the Recueil d'essais lithographiques, records a drawing by Antoine-Laurent Castellan. It depicts an idealized landscape with onlookers beside an imposing tomb.
