Tavern with a couple embracing (mezzotint (print); Vaillant, Wallerant (engraver, 1623-1677); Published: n.d.; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 1565-861; 543531; accession number: 2000.PR.40**)
Note: Title from Hollstein; State II. according to Hollstein; also possibly identical with the print listed by Wurzbach under the title "Das traute Liebespaar."; Signed with the monogram: WV, in white, in the bottom right; The Dutch painter, draftsman and engraver Cornelisz Pietersz Bega (ca. 1631-1664) is known for his genre pictures of Dutch peasant life; A reproductive print after Cornelis Pietersz Bega (cf. Hollstein). The print shows a tavern scene: a peasant couple sitting on a wooden bench embraces in a dim, sparsely furnished interior, while in the background to the right of the couple a third figure (an old woman or procuress) turns away from the viewer. A barrel behind the bench, with the image of a duck or goose on its lid, identifies the place as a tavern. The motif of an embracing couple in a tavern setting suggests the pictorial tradition of the theme of the prodigal son with a tavern harlot, a popular subject in Dutch genre painting in 16th-17th centuries; Dutch printmaker, famous for his mezzotint engravings; also a portrait painter. Wallerant Vaillant (1623-1677) was born in Lille and died in Amsterdam. Publication: n.d.
