Note: The cavalcade was described by Alessandro Macchia in: Relatione del viaggio fatto dalla s. d. s. pp. Leone XI. nel pigliare il possesso a San Giovanni Laterano ... (In Roma : Appresso Guglielmo Facciotto, 1605); The print depicts the cavalcade accompanying Pope Leo XI through the "Arco dei Fiorentini in Banchi" and the "Arco di Campidoglio" on the occasion of his taking possession of the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano on April 17, 1605; Above the horse procession, two branches spring out from the Medici coat of arms, holding portrait medallions of Leo X, Clement VII, Pius IV, and Leo XI. Inscriptions identify the participants in the procession and the apparati, such as the "speziaria del drago". A biography of Pope Leo XI is etched in the plate's lower margin; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**). | |
