La festa di Testaccio fatta in Roma (etching (print); Du Pérac, Etienne (etcher, died1604); published 16th century; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 562436; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 692);)
Note: The print depicts a festival in Monte Testaccio, Rome, featuring a tournament, a bullfight and the killing of a swine taking place before crowds of onlookers. The pyramidal tomb of Gaius Cestius, aqueducts and the surrounding hills appear in the background, while exotic animals, such as a camel, are shown amidst the crowds; An inscription decorated with pontifical arms is printed on a city wall in the lower left corner: P.III. P.M. 1534 [i.e. Paulus III. Pontifex Maximus]. According to Robert-Dumesnil and Linzeler, the date should be read as 1554; Étienne Du Pérac, a French painter, engraver, etcher and architect, was active in Rome for several decades; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).. [15--]
