Ago sacelli qvod S. Ignatio de Loyola (etching (print); Mariotti, Vincenzo (printmaker, died 1738); published 1697; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 640481; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 837))
Note: The print depicts the altar for the tomb of Ignatius Loyola in the left transept of Il Gesù in Rome. The commission for the altar, supervised by the Jesuit brother Carlo Mauro Bonacina, was given to the Jesuit architect Father Andrea Pozzo, who had collaborators for the project; The silver and bronze statue of the apotheosis of St. Ignatius by Pierre Legros, which was later melted down by order of Pius VI to pay the tribute imposed by Napoleon, serves as the centerpiece for the altar. It is flanked by marble sculpture groups: Faith conquering Idolatry, by Jean-Baptiste Théodon, on the left, and Religion overthrowing Heresy, by Pierre Legros, on the right. Giovanni Battista Gaulli, also known as Baciccio, painted the ceiling fresco St. Ignatius in glory on the vault of the chapel; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**). Publication: [1697].
