Eigentlicher Abriss und Beschreibung des sehr künstlich-bereiteten, kostbarn und hochansehligen Feuerwercks (engraving (print); unknown printmaker; published ca. 1666?; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 132864; accession number: 2000.PR.53**)
Note: Title from caption of attached text; Unsigned; A similar, unsigned print, with minor differences in style, and with slightly variant size of the plate mark is bound into the 1667 edition of a contemporary description of the event, issued under the title "Von Himmeln entzündete und, durch allgemeinen Zuruff der Erde, sich himmelwerts erschwingende Frolockungs-Flammen"; The print represents a fireworks display celebrating the marriage of Leopold I to Margarita Teresa, daughter of Philip IV of Spain; It consists of an engraving, to which is attached contemporary printed matter with text describing the fireworks and the allegorical enactments depicted in the print, and including a legend corresponding to the print in the lower left corner. The text also provides additional details of the pyrotechnic effects, and includes names of the choreographers Graf Ernst von Abensperg und Traun and Bartholomäus Peissker; The events take place in Vienna, in front of the Burg ("Kayserl. Burck-Thor / gleich ausser der Haupt-und Residentz-Stadt Wien", cf. text of broadside). In the foreground on the left is Mount Aetna, with Vulcan's forge; on the right is Mount Parnassus with Pegasus and the nine Muses. Hercules's fight with Centaurs takes place between the mounts. Two castle towers in the middleground symbolize Austria and Spain. Fireworks explode from the tower on the left. In the sky above the towers appear the letters "VA" for "Vivat Austria", and "VH" for "Vivat Hispania"; and further above in the sky the letters "VL" for "Vivat Leopoldus" and "VM" for "Vivat Margarita"; this last (i.e. "VM") is mentioned in the text but not is present in the print. The letters "AEIOV" for "Austria Erit In Omne Ultimum" are visible in the sky in the right part of the image. Between the towers, two arches decorated with hearts bearing the initials "L" and "M" flank the central figure of Cupid. The hearts are ignited by flames sent by Mercury, who appears in the sky above. Behind the arches, an arcaded court leads to a vaulted edifice symbolizing the temple of Hymen, the god of marriage, on top of which the bird Phoenix appears consumed by flames. Jupiter's eagle ignites an altar erected in the middle of the arcaded court. A dense, spectacular display of fireworks is cast from several pyrotechnic devices installed in the open field in the background; The print has a reinforcing hinge attached at the left margin on verso. Number "198" is penciled in within the top margin; Library has the 1667 edition of "Von Himmeln entzündete und, durch allgemeinen Zuruff der Erde, sich himmelwerts erschwingende Frolockungs-Flammen", which contains a similar print (Special Collections id 1536-263). Published: [ca. 1666?]. The print represents a fireworks display celebrating the marriage of Leopold I to Margarita Teresa, daughter of Philip IV of Spain .
