Castell im Vincenner Wald (engraving (print); unknown printmaker; published ca. 1650; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 132876; accession number: 840033**)
Note: The print depicts the Château de Vincennes as it appeared in 1650. The print also depicts a historical event in French history called the Fronde of the Princes. Initiating the second phase of the civil war, from January 1650 to September 1653, the military leader and cousin of Louis XIV, Louis II de Bourbon, 4th Prince de Condé, disappointed in his hopes for political power, rebelled. Cardinal Mazarin had Condé, his brother, and his brother-in-law, Duc de Longueville (Henri II d'Orleans) arrested on January 18, 1650 and imprisoned at the Château de Vincennes for thirteen months. The print depicts the arrival of the three princes and their armed escorts at the castle. A horse drawn carriage enters the forecourt of the castle, while another carriage advances towards the main gate. A scrolled cartouche below the castle encloses the scene of an armed confrontation between Prince de Conde and Guitaut, with the names "M. Guitaut" and "P. d. Conde" engraved within the image. Published: ca. 1650.
