The statue Victorious Youth, popularly known as the "Getty bronze", is one of a very few life-size bronzes from ancient Greece known to exist in the world today. These surviving pieces are representatives of literally thousands of such statues that were once displayed in sanctuaries, city centers, and private homes and gardens. Their scarcity has led modern eyes to view them as one-of-a-kind works. The author takes a more objective view of these statues as she discusses Victorious Youth in its ancient context of public memorials, private collectors, market-oriented workshops, and long-distance transportation.

In this first full study of the sculpture in nearly twenty years, the author takes into account the most recent art-historical information and scientific data now known about the piece. Included is a complete conservation report.

Carol C. Mattusch is a professor of art history at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. Among her publications is Classical Bronzes: The Art and Craft of Greek and Roman Statuary. She recently organized the exhibition The Fire of Hephaistos: Classical Bronzes from North American Collections for which she also wrote and edited the catalog.
