A discussion of the popular medieval story of a wealthy knight's dreamlike journey through hell, purgatory, and heaven. Although there are many manuscript versions of this story in many languages, the manuscript in the Getty Museum is the only illuminated copy known to exist. It contains twenty miniatures attributed to Simon Marmion, the celebrated illuminator. Commissioned by Margaret of York, the Duchess of Burgundy, the manuscript became the jewel of her library. All twenty miniatures are reproduced here in their original sequence for the first time.
