Published to coincide with an exhibition of a Getty Conservation Institute project, Picture L.A. is a documentation of Los Angeles landmarks viewed through the eyes of eight young photographers. These highly motivated youths, ages ten to eighteen, came from diverse ethnic and geographic backgrounds within the central Los Angeles area. Working independently, they photographed the personally significant social and architectural landmarks of their own
communities. In addition, as a group they visited selected historic sites, bringing their individual points of view to traditional landmarks.
The resulting selection, culled from hundreds of black-and-white photographs, is reproduced here. Also included are quotes from the participants on their chosen subjects along with short biographies and color images of them taken by the
supervising professional photographer.
