Paymal Lerebours, Noel Marie (French photographer, publisher, and optician, 1807-1873)

Note: Born 15 February 1807; died 24 July 1873. In 1839, Lerebours took over his father's shop in Paris, which supplied photographic equipment to travellers and explorers. That year, Lerebours sent teams of daguerreotypists to take the first photographs of sites and monuments around the globe, including Egypt, Syria, Greece, Niagara Falls, and London, England. In 1840, Lerebours began to put together a book of engravings based on the daguerreotypes brought back by his photographers. The book was entitled "Excursions daguerriennes: Vues et monuments les plus remarquables du globe" and was published in 1842. In 1841, Lerebours produced daguerreotype portraits with M.A. Gaudin. He also began to construct materials needed to make daguerreotypes as well as writing "Latest Improvements in Daguerreotype". In 1842, Lerebours produced a daguerreotype of Notre-Dame, Paris. In 1844-1845, Lerebours joined Marc (Marie?) François Louis Secretan to form an optical instrument business called "Lerebours et Secretan", which began advertising portraits. In 1846, Lerebours gave lessons in daguerreotypy. In 1850, Lerebours et Secretan became opticians to the French Observatory and to the French Navy and in 1853, to the Emperor. |
