Note: Located on Kromme Rijn, Oude Rijn and Vecht rivers. Inhabited by Romans as early as 48 BCE ans was the headquarters of bishop St. Willibrord in 696. It was residence to early German emperors and was chartered in 1122. Important ecclesiastical, cultural, and commercial city, it was also the home of Adrian IV, the only Dutch pope. The Peace Treaty of Utrecht ending the War of Spanish Succession was signed here in 1713.
