Note: The city of Celle is Located on The Aller River, at the edge of the Lüneburg heath in the district of Lüneburg in the German state of Lower Saxony. The old town was founded around 1248 and the newer section in 1292; the latter became the residence of the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg from 1374 to 1705. It prospered during medieval times, and was noted since 1698 for its wax-processing industry. The old town has many half-timbered buildings from the 16th to the 19th centuries, including the old grammar school, built 1603. It has one of the oldest dye works in Europe. Other industries include the manufacture of potash, petroleum products, mining equipment, electronic components, textiles, and biscuits. There are technical colleges and research institutions for forestry, agriculture, bees, and viruses. It is also famed for horse breeding and tree nurseries. The city was damaged in World War II. The 2004 estimated population was 71,800.
