Note: Members of a species of giant-sized, stocky, North American burrowing ground squirrel, common in the northeastern and central United States, north to Alaska and southeast to Alabama. According to popular legend in the United States, the woodchuck emerges from hibernation to predict the coming of warm weather each year on February 2, designated as Groundhog Day and corresponding to the older Christian feast day, the Purification of the Virgin Mary, and to more ancient ceremonies marking the mid-point between the solstice and equinox.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 一種大型矮胖的北美土撥鼠，常見於美國東北部以及中部，涵蓋地區北至阿拉斯加州，東南至阿拉巴馬州。美國廣為流傳的傳說中提到，土撥鼠在冬眠過後，會在每年的二月二日，從土裡鑽出來預報溫暖天氣的到來；因此，二月二日稱作土撥鼠日(Groundhog Day)。土撥鼠日與較古老的基督教節日「聖蠋節」（聖母取潔）為同一天，而在古老習俗中，亦是冬至與春分之間的中間點。 |
