Note: Refers to the period and style that developed from the unification of Japan in 1600 until the end of the shogunal dynasty in 1868. During this period, economic expansion encouraged the rise of an educated merchant class who created their own forms of literature and theater as well as new schools of painting and woodblock printing. A wide diversity of pictorial subjects and styles developed during this period and many 19th century Western artists were influenced by them.

Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de periode en stijl die zich ontwikkelde van de eenwording van Japan in 1600 tot het eind van de shogundynastie in 1868. Tijdens deze periode leidde economische expansie tot de opkomst van een goed opgeleide handelsklasse die niet alleen nieuwe schilder- en blokdrukstromingen maar ook haar eigen vormen van literatuur en theater schiep. Er ontstond een grote diversiteit aan onderwerpen en stijlen in de beeldende kunst, waardoor veel 19de-eeuwse westerse kunstenaars zijn beïnvloed. 
Spanish ..... Se refiere al período y al estilo que convirtieron la unificación de Japón en 1600 hasta el final de la dinastía de 1868. Durante este período, la extensión económica animó la subida de una clase mercantil educada que creó sus propias formas de literatura y de teatro así como escuelas nuevas de la pintura y de la impresión. Una diversidad amplia de temas y de estilos ilustrados se realizo durante este período y ellos influenciaron a muchos artistas occidentales del siglo XIX.
