Draw among the masterpieces in the Sketching Gallery, a unique space in the J. Paul Getty Museum where you can participate in the tradition of sketching from works of art. Like a classical European art academy, the Sketching Gallery is filled with works of art for artists of all levels—from casual visitors to advanced practitioners—to study and copy.
The Sketching Gallery features six original oil paintings from the Museum's collection, including Giovanni Lanfranco's dramatic Moses and the Messengers from Canaan and Four Studies of a Male Head from the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens, and three casts of sculptures, including Adriaen de Vries' dynamic Juggling Man and Jean-Baptiste Pigalle's expressive Busts of Two Sisters: Brigitte François Elisabeth de Lansire and Adélaïde Julie Mirleau de Neuville.

How to Participate
Pick up free sketching paper, drawing pencils, charcoal, and art sticks from the friendly docent. Choose a painting or sculpture to draw and find the best point of view to work from. You can work in a group at the shared drawing table or set up your easel on one of the specially designed artists' benches.
Check the labels on each work to get ideas for artistic exercises, or browse the bookshelf to learn about the elements of art and artistic styles and to see examples of other drawings.
The Tradition of Sketching in Museums
Artists have always studied works of art from the past, motivated by admiration for the traditions of art and a desire to learn. Young artists trained their hands and eyes by copying, and drawing as a formal course of study was established by the first European art academies. In these academies, students first drew after other artists' drawings, then after paintings, and finally after sculptures or plaster casts of famous statues. Thus, aspiring artists began with straightforward copying and ended with interpretation, translating a three-dimensional object into a two-dimensional work.
Artists of the 19th and 20th centuries continued to draw from the past, often adapting prior traditions to pursue their own visions. Use the art in the Sketching Gallery to develop your own vision.
