Unforgettable Journeys

Join us for a staycation weekend with Selected Shorts, as the celebrated series returns to the Getty Center with an unforgettable lineup of travel stories. Exploring destinations real and imaginary, far-flung and close at hand, these journeys feature wild adventures, comic mishaps, and unexpected encounters.

Produced by New York's Symphony Space, Selected Shorts is an annual series featuring actors from stage, screen, and television reading classic and new short fiction.

Cary Grant was the star, but it was his gorgeous trim suit that had the adventures, threading its way through America.

"The Man Who Blew Away" by Beryl Bainbridge, performed by Joe Mantegna (Criminal Minds, The Starter Wife)
A quirky tale about a proper Englishman to whom something very unexpected happens while he's vacationing on Corfu.

"Which Is More Than I Can Say About Some People" by Lorrie Moore, performed by Kate Burton (Grey's Anatomy)
A hilarious and moving tale of a mother and daughter's rapprochement while on a vacation together in Ireland.

A magical retelling of a Japanese legend about an old painter and his disciple who go on a long journey and get into great trouble; will the master's painting get them out of a tight spot?

"The Kugelmass Episode" by Woody Allen, performed by Isaiah Sheffer (artistic director of Symphony Space)
With the aid of a magic cabinet, a dissatisfied professor embarks on a passionate affair with Emma Bovary, heroine of Gustave Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary. Fantasy and reality soon collide, with hilarious results.

A young man is derailed from his practical studies in 1926 Paris by hawkers, soubrettes, gigolos, and street performers.

"The Mappist" by Barry Lopez, performed by Joe Spano (Navy NCIS, Hill Street Blues)
On a trip to Japan, a young geographer meets a mapmaker and delves into the magical side of the mapmaker's art.
