About Pompeii and the Roman Villa
On view May 3–October 4 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, 90036
Before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, one of the world's great artistic centers was flourishing in Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. This exhibition takes you inside the homes of the region's wealthy Roman patrons to discover their collections of sculptures, paintings, mosaics, and luxury arts created during this uniquely inspired time—some of which were only recently discovered and have never been seen in the United States.

The exhibition illuminates not only Pompeii's demise, but also its rise as an artistic center of exceptional sophistication. The show explores several themes, including:

  • patrons at home,
  • courtyards and gardens,
  • the sumptuous frescoes in the triclinium (open dining room) of Moregine,
  • the taste among Roman collectors for ancient Greek art, and
  • the rediscovery and excavation of the sites around the Bay of Naples during the 18th and 19th centuries and the resurgence of the taste for the antique in the modern world.

The exhibition includes works of art from numerous ancient Roman villas, including the Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum—the luxury estate upon which the architecture and gardens of the Getty Villa are modeled. The exhibition is co-curated by Kenneth Lapatin, associate curator of Antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
