Friday Nights at the Getty: Maria Gillespie/Oni Dance

Date: Friday, September 30, 2005, and Saturday, October 1, 2005
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations required.

Maria Gillespie, choreographer and artistic director of Los Angeles-based dance company Oni Dance, presents her newest work, Bandits, in two free performances at the Getty Center. The premiere on Friday, September 30, is followed by an encore performance on Saturday, October 1.

Bandits is a suite of dances that investigate how individuals inspire, influence, and challenge one another. The dancers become sculptors and calligraphers of space. Ideas and images confront one another as individuals converge and divide to leave their mark on the world.

About Oni Dance
This performance marks the conclusion of Oni Dance's first season as a company. The company has performed as part of the L.A. Improv Festival, the Brand Library Dance Series, and Highways Birthday Benefit; created a commission for Pomona College; and premiered Imperfection/Unsung at REDCAT.

Performers of Oni Dance are Noellie Bordelet, Gillespie, Holly Johnston, Diana Mehoudar, Nguyen Nguyen, and Carlos Rodriquez.

About Maria Gillespie
A three-time Lester Horton Award Winner, Maria Gillespie was selected in January 2005 as one of Dance Magazine's "Top 25 to Watch."

Gillespies's dances capture unpredictable moments in the body, frame the peculiarities of the psyche, and inspire with kinetic wit. They "ricochet between vulnerability and strength with razor-sharp shifts in intensity and intent," says The Los Angeles Times.
