Mary Morton, co-curator of the current exhibition Courbet and the Modern Landscape, discusses Gustave Courbet's career during the 1860s, a decade of electric change both for Courbet and for the Parisian art scene.
Courbet made his reputation in the 1840s and 1850s as a painter of group scenes, but he spent the 1860s and 1870s focusing on landscapes. Learn why Courbet made this shift and how his radical innovations in technique and composition helped transform landscape into the central avant-garde genre.
About Mary Morton
Mary Morton is a specialist in 19th-century French painting and the art scene of 1860s Paris. A native of Los Angeles, Dr. Morton was a curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, before joining the J. Paul Getty Museum in 2004. She has contributed to numerous exhibitions and publications on 19th-century European art and assisted the MFA Houston in acquiring The Gust of Wind (above) in 2002.
