Friday Nights at the Getty: Angels of the East (performance)

Date: Friday, September 29, 2006
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations required.

Two rising stars of the local music scene unite for an evening of inspired, fearless indie pop.

Los Angeles chanteuse Eleni Mandell, whose songwriting influences range from Cole Porter to Hank Williams, spins satin-voiced tales of L.A. love gone wrong—or right—that will delight even the most jaded ear.

Mandell merges provocative, confessional lyrics with spellbinding vocals that are sometimes cool and languid, sometimes fierce and gritty. Named songwriter of the year by L.A. Weekly, Mandell has earned comparisons to PJ Harvey and Liz Phair and been called "a sultry chanteuse for adults."

Becky Stark—dancer, comedienne, composer, singer, and leader of the local indie-folk quartet Lavender Diamond—lends crystalline conviction to simple, winsome tunes with her astonishingly pure vocals.

Amazingly versatile, this onetime church choir and punk-opera star is master of all genres, from country ballads and classical arias to psychedelic doo-wop and tin-pan alley tunes. Stark describes her performances as an opportunity "to make the most beautiful sound I can possibly make, to make the whole performance exist as a source of joy."
