Family Festival

Explore the ancient world with a day of music, storytelling, and art-making inspired by the Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities in the permanent collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa. Make antique-inspired headgear, explore the music of North Africa, and even help build Rome in a day!

Admission is free; an advance, timed ticket is required. Each ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 or under with you in one car.

The Cyclops in Boxtales' theatrical version of the Odyssey


Music

Souk-Sonik—Music from the Medina
Souk-Sonik performs music from the Medina—a blend of North African Gnawa rhythms and Middle Eastern melodies. Featuring Avi Sills and Alex Spurkel on percussion and Tim Abdullah on gumbri, clarinet, and oud.

Ciganski Volcan—Music of the Eastern Mediterranean and Balkans
Ciganski Volkan serves up a unique and worldly musical melange. With Romanian folk music at its center, the band melds flamenco, Swedish folk music, and klezmer reminiscent of the smoky cafés of Bucharest and of Gypsy caravans.

Boxtales—Got Homer?
Join Greek hero Odysseus as he tells of his ten-year journey home from the Trojan War, including his encounters with Poseidon, Athena, Zeus, the Cyclops, and the Sirens.

Art-Making Workshops

Ancient Embellishments
Design your own jewelry inspired by pieces in the permanent collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa using beads, baubles, wire, and string.

Hellenistic Helmets with Marcus Kuiland-Nazario
Create a headpiece inspired by the warriors found on ancient storage vessels in the permanent collection. Participants will use paper and craft supplies to fashion their own unique headgear.

Building Rome in a Day with Liz Glynn
This reconstruction project traces the evolution of the ancient capital from 753 B.C. to A.D. 410. Working with salvaged supplies and an archive of reference material, participants will recreate the major monuments and public buildings in historic order.
