Explore the rich artistic traditions of the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East with this day of family fun complementing the once-in-a-lifetime exhibition Holy Image, Hallowed Ground: Icons from Sinai.

Souhail Kaspar

Music and Dance

SK Near East Music
Experience the traditional music of the Middle East and North Africa from this Los Angeles-based ensemble led by master percussionist Souhail Kaspar. Hear the sounds of the oud, violin, frame drum, and dumbek, a goblet drum.

The Yuval Ron Ensemble
Celebrate the musical traditions of the Middle East with this group of Arabic, Jewish, and Christian artists. Dancer Maya Karasso and singer Tehila Lauder join the ensemble as they perform the music of Bedouin tribes indigenous to the Sinai Desert as well as Israeli and Palestinian songs and music from Egypt and Turkey.

The St. Sophia Cathedral Dance Program
Tap along to upbeat Greek folk dances set to the lyra, a violin-like instrument with bells on the bow. A children's group performs dances from Epirus in northern Greece, and a young adult group performs dances from the island of Karpathos.

Carl Weintraub: The Mountain and Moses
Join the acclaimed L.A. storyteller as he brings to life the universal story of Moses, from the banks of the Nile to the heights of Mount Sinai.

Echoes from the Desert with Alidz Agbabian and the Tellers from the Mountain
Let storyteller Alidz Agbabian, percussionist Mher Vaharn, singer Areni Agbabian, and storyteller Ari Agbabian delight you with fables about witty and wily desert animals of the Sinai and transport you into the mystical world of St. Catherine's Monastery with legends and songs from diverse Middle Eastern traditions.
