The David Ross Show

Date: Thursday, April 3, 2008
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations required.

Really good conversation about art with David Ross. David stops in Los Angeles to revisit the era of video art, which he championed while curator at the Long Beach Museum of Art. Get inside stories on the exhibition California Video from curator Glenn Phillips and catch first-person takes from artists whose work is featured in the exhibition, including Suzanne Lacy, Paul McCarthy, Ilene Segalove, Doug Hall, Chip Lord, and William Wegman. Get the answers to all your probing questions—How did John Baldessari get the idea to sing pop-song versions of Sol LeWitt's "Sentences on Conceptual Art"? How does Paul McCarthy combine the scatological with the sublime? Get ready for spirited exchanges as Ross and his guests break through the static to explore the untold history of California video art. KUSC radio host Alan Chapman provides the musical backdrop.

Host:

  • David Ross, former director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art

Guests:

  • John Baldessari, one of the great artistic masters of irony, who swore in 1971 to make no boring art
  • Glenn Phillips, curator of California Video
  • Suzanne Lacy, who addresses social issues through performance and has depicted herself as a carnivorous monster and a vampire
  • Paul McCarthy, master of the disturbing, who makes videos and sculptures that tap into the messy American unconscious
  • Ilene Segalove, who mines her Beverly Hills childhood as she explores television's role as a home movie for our media-driven society
  • Bill Viola, artist-philosopher who explores video as an electronic circuit independent of external reality
  • Doug Hall, co-founder of the artist collective T.R. Uthco, which pondered the nature of truth and illusion through the character of the "Artist President"
  • Chip Lord, co-founder of the artist collective Ant Farm, which critiqued the corporate media and drove a Cadillac into a wall of burning TVs
  • William Wegman, dryly witty pioneer of performance-based video art and master to legendary Weimaraner Man Ray
