Artist-at-Work Demonstrations
Summer and Fall 2008

Demonstrations by practicing artists are offered year-round at the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. Meet the artists, ask questions, and get up close to the action as you learn about a wide range of drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography techniques.

Demonstrations are always free; drop by any time during the scheduled times, listed below. Admission to the Getty Villa requires an advance, timed ticket. Check ticket availability here.

Wet-Plate Collodion Negatives and Albumen Prints

Drop by as photographer Luther Gerlach demonstrates how to make wet-plate collodion negatives and albumen prints using authentic mammoth plate cameras, lenses, and procedures from the 19th century. Complements the exhibition Dialogue among Giants: Carleton Watkins and the Rise of Photography in California. Free; no reservations required.

Making Mosaics
Thursday–Monday, October 30–November 3, 2008

Getty Villa, Education Studio

Drop in as world-renowned mosaicist Lillian Sizemore demonstrates ancient and modern mosaic-making techniques featuring a vast array of contemporary and traditional materials, resources, and setting styles. Watch Sizemore create a hand-cut piece using a traditional hammer and hardie (chiseled cutting tool), and try your hand at setting a bit of mosaic. Free with your advance, timed ticket to the Getty Villa.
