The Photographs of Frederick Sommer:
A Centennial Tribute
May 10–September 4, 2005

The sublime and the surreal unite in Frederick Sommer's impeccably crafted, sometimes macabre scenes. An acute observer, Sommer captured fascinating details in his still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. This exhibition celebrates the one hundredth anniversary of his birth.

Scene of the Crime: Photo by Weegee
September 20, 2005–January 22, 2006

Merging visual boldness with sly humor, New York tabloid photographer Weegee—nickname for Arthur Fellig—materialized wherever news was happening.

With his Speed Graphic camera and supply of flashbulbs, Weegee covered all aspects of Manhattan nightlife, selling pictures by morning to the tabloids, broadsheets, and picture agencies. His photographs are both works of art and documents of the raucous 1930s and 1940s.

Pictures for the Press
September 20, 2005–January 22, 2006

News-making images from World War II to Vietnam take center stage in this exploration of photojournalism as art. See how both celebrated documentarians and anonymous news-watchers saw the turning points of the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, from the atomic explosion over Nagasaki to civil rights demonstrations in Birmingham, Alabama.
