A Guide to the Description of Architectural Drawings

Groups/Items Categories:

Related People/Corporate Bodies

Related Person/Corporate Body Description
Related Person/Corporate Body Name*
Related Role

These categories record the identities and roles of people and corporate bodies related in any way to the group or item to which an entry corresponds. Related people and corporate bodies may be actively involved with the making of a group or item, even though not in the role of maker or originator. Included are former attributions, architects under whose supervision an item was made, clients of structures (if the item is a design and construction document), patrons of items, publishers, and others. Excluded from this category are makers of items and administrative origin of groups, since these are covered in the preceding section, Origin/Maker.

In modern architectural firms, documents are often the result of collaboration. Therefore, several individuals and the firm itself are often considered to be responsible for a single document. These categories make it possible to record the names of these individuals and firms and their roles.

Example:

For a drawing made by Steven Forman while employed as a draftsman with Richard Meier and Partners on a project for which the project architect was Richard Meier:

RESPONSIBILITY DESCRIPTION:

Steven Forman, draftsman, for Richard Meier and Partners

ORIGIN/MAKER NAME:

Forman, Steven

ROLE (BROAD):

maker

ROLE (NARROW):

draftsman

RELATED PERSON/ CORPORATE BODY NAME:

Richard Meier and Partners

RELATED ROLE:

architectural firm

RELATED PERSON/ CORPORATE BODY NAME:

Meier, Richard

RELATED ROLE:

project architect

This example is typical of design and construction documents, for which there may be many people and corporate bodies related not only to a group or item, but also to a subject or built work. In these cases, the parties should also be named in the appropriate entries in the Subjects/Built Works authorities, if these files are maintained.

If a name of a person or corporate body appears on the document but the role is unknown, the name may be recorded and the related role expressed as unknown role.

Example:

The following names are inscribed on documents within a group, though their roles are unknown:

RELATED PERSON/CORPORATE BODY NAMES:

J. Herbert & Son

Garrwood Godard & Co.

Hopewell, Charles

Campbell, J.A.

butterworth & co.

aloncisco, g.

w. mills & son

arnoldi, c.

Foley, John

Gionloff, John

RELATED ROLE:

unknown role

Former or alternative attributions should be recorded, even though the repository may not view such attributions as accurate. Former attributions are often known through previous publications, and researchers will often find names through sources such as these. For example, a researcher may know a drawing of the Louvre as the work of Fran\xE7ois Le Vau, but the repository may attribute the drawing to Fran\xE7ois d'Orbay. The researcher may not be able to retrieve the drawing if Le Vau is not recorded as a person related to the item. By recording former attributions, a repository does not imply acceptance of them; it can even choose not to display the attributed name in the record. See Related Person/Corporate Body Description for ways in which to qualify displayed information.

Category: Related Person/Corporate Body Description

Definition:
A descriptive category in which to identify anyone who is or was previously thought to have had something to do with originating or making the group, volume, or item—makers and administrative origins excluded. The description uses natural language and may include qualifications and nuances of attribution and explanation of sequence or institutional context.

Discussion:
This category is analogous to Responsibility Description (under Origin/Maker). It allows for the description of circumstances surrounding the creation of architectural documents. Retrieval capability is not sacrificed since the information included is also recorded in access-point categories.

Former or alternative attributions may be indicated as follows:

Formerly attributed to may precede the name of the person(s) once thought to be the maker(s).

Alternatively attributed to may precede the name of the person(s) either the repository or current research deems to be the maker(s).

Sources for the attribution may be added in parentheses after the name.

Example:

formerly attributed to Donato Bramante (Ferri)

Conventions used for attributions to anonymous makers may be used for alternative attributions; see Responsibility Description.

Examples:

alternatively attributed to office of Christopher Wren

Category: Related Person/Corporate Body Name*

Definition:
The indexed (inverted order) name of any person or corporate body involved with originating or making the group or item, such as an architect who supervised a draftsman's work, or a client for a set of drawings.

Discussion:
This category should be authority-controlled to allow for the retrieval of specific names.

Examples:

Wren, Christopher, Office of

Category: Related Role

Definition:
The activity or area of responsibility of the person or corporate body related to the group or item.

Discussion:
This category records the nature of the relationship between a person or corporate body and a group, volume, or item. Makers of items and administrative origins of groups are excluded because they are recorded in the separate categories Role (Broad), Role(Narrow), and Responsibility Description (under Origin/Maker).

Terminology:
When using the AAT, terms may be taken from the People (HG) and Organizations (HN) hierarchies. [1]

Examples:

architects
builders
designers
sculptors
draftsmen (for former attributions)
clients
engineers
inscribers
masters
planners
dedicatees

Implementation:
access point
terminology-controlled
optional
repeatable
