Subject/Built Work Characteristics

SUBJECT/BUILT WORK DESCRIPTION:

The Pantheon is a large, imposing structure, composed of a domed rotunda (interior diameter, 142 feet) attached to a columned entrance portico. Now free-standing, the building originally formed the focal point of a long, porticoed forecourt. On the interior, the coffered dome is opened in the center by a broad oculus. Six of the seven niches are screened off from the vast central space by doubled columns. The upper levels are decorated with a rich marble revetment.
The Pantheon has been in continuous use since its dedication to the seven planetary gods in A.D. 128 and its consecration as a church in the early seventh century. It is the major surviving example of concrete-vaulted architecture which was Rome's unique contribution to European architecture. [Partially abstracted from Ward-Perkins, 1977, pp. 133-142.]
