J. Paul Getty Museum, Getty Research Institute, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art Collaboration: Accessioning the Mapplethorpe Collection

Grant Period: October 2011–June 2015

Untitled / Mapplethorpe

This grant funds a partnership between the Getty Research Institute, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, enabling quick processing of the Robert Mapplethorpe archive, which was acquired jointly by these institutions in early 2011 from the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation.

The archive contains an extensive array of work and documentation created or owned by the artist, including more than 200 unique artworks and hundreds of Polaroids from his studio practice. Dating before 1975 and overshadowed by the impact of his later large-format photographs, these early works complement the approximately 2,000 editioned photographs and other works of art by Mapplethorpe housed at the Getty Museum.

Grant support also enabled temporary staff to work with curators, conservators, cataloguers, collections managers, and digital imaging experts to create a finding aid for the sections of the archive that are now available.
